Dr. Kelly Drake

Dr. Kelly DrakeFor Dr. Kelly Drake, pets have been an important part of life since childhood—the companionship and enjoyment they brought him as a youngster made a permanent impression! Kelly decided early on that it was absolutely necessary to make sure the bond between pet and owner lasts as long as possible. He was inspired to pursue his dream of becoming a veterinarian in order to keep your pets healthy and happy.

Born in Colorado, Dr. Drake moved to Anchorage, Alaska when he was only three years old. He would eventually return to Colorado for college, graduating from Colorado State University’s veterinary school in 1982. He moved back to Anchorage with his wife to start his veterinary career, practicing there until 1995. Even though he loved the scenery and outdoor life of Alaska, Kelly says the long, dark winters ultimately took their toll. He and his family decided to settle in the welcoming city of Round Rock, where he is now the Owner and Chief Veterinarian of Drake Pet Hospital.

Kelly’s favorite parts of practicing veterinary medicine are surgery and dentistry. He likes to work with his hands in surgery, which gives him the gratification of directly fixing a pet’s problem. The dramatic changes in the way an animal feels after a dental or surgical procedure is the ultimate reward!

Dr. Drake’s interests and accomplishments outside of work are as exciting and varied as the pet cases he sees and fixes every day. He began skiing at seven years of age, becoming the Junior National Slalom champion in 1971. From 1972 to 1975, he even competed nationally and internationally as a member of the United States Alpine Ski Team! At home, Dr. Drake brews his own beer—his Kolsch Ale placed third in the Master’s Championship of Amateur Brewing. He is also the founder and a current board member of Chaparral Star Academy, a top-rated open-enrollment charter school in Texas.

Kelly is also a private pilot, having earned his pilot’s license in 1974. Afterwards, he bought a single-engine Piper PA-12 in Chicago and flew it all the way to Anchorage, Alaska. Remarkably, Dr. Drake walked away unscathed from two small-plane crashes (he was a passenger in both cases, not the pilot!).

Kelly and his wife Annie have two daughters—the oldest, Kelsey, is a resident in emergency medicine at a Dallas hospital, and Courtney works in Brooklyn designing innovative educational software. Dr. Drake and his wife live with their diabetic cat Gumbo, their dog Ernie, and another cat named Roux. The trio’s antics combine to provide a constant source of entertainment!
